Where you can get involved
The FOJ drafts legislation in the areas of civil, criminal, constitutional and administrative law, and advises the Federal Administration on all legislative matters. It maintains the register of convictions and cooperates with foreign authorities in the case of mutual assistance. Internationally, the FOJ represents Switzerland before the Strasbourg human rights bodies and in other organisations.
The Armed Forces ensure the training of troops, militia cadres and career military personnel, as well as the supply and return of weapons, equipment and foodstuffs. The Armed Forces also operate in the field of modern information and communication technologies. Furthermore, the Armed Forces are involved in peacebuilding, disaster relief and the planning and management of event security.
The SEM determines the conditions under which a person may enter Switzerland and live and work here. It decides who is granted protection from persecution and, together with the cantons, organises the accommodation or repatriation of asylum seekers. Furthermore, the SEM coordinates integration work, is responsible for naturalising foreigners and is involved internationally in steering migration flows.
The Directorate of International Law safeguards Switzerland's rights and interests arising from international law. It deals with legal aspects of Swiss neutrality, human rights and the Geneva Conventions, and is involved in concluding international treaties. The Swiss Maritime Navigation Office is attached to the DIL.
The Consular Directorate acts as a central contact point and works together with the Swiss representations to provide efficient, customer-oriented consular services worldwide. As a central contact point within the Federal Administration, it coordinates all matters relating to Swiss nationals living abroad and their support concerns.
fedpol manages police cooperation in Switzerland and abroad, and investigates federal criminal cases involving serious crime. It protects people and buildings under the federal government's responsibility and operates national information systems and competence centres. The focus is on combating terrorism, cybercrime, money laundering and organised crime.
armasuisse is the DDPS competence centre for procurement, technology and real estate. It supplies the Armed Forces and third parties with systems, vehicles, planes, helicopters, equipment and real estate, including 7,500 buildings and facilities, as well as 24,000 hectares of land. As armasuisse manages weapons, equipment and real estate over their entire useful life, it is also responsible for their disposal.
Customs and border security specialists ensure the smooth cross-border movement of goods and people. The FOCBS also collects VAT, mineral oil tax and tobacco duty, and carries out security police and migration tasks.
The SICL is an independent federal organisation. Its main task is to make foreign and international law accessible to courts, administrative authorities and non-profit and international organisations in an objective manner. The institute conducts comparative law research on selected current topics, including international law.
The FIS combats terrorism, violent extremism, espionage, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and cyberattacks on critical infrastructures. It monitors strategic developments, assesses the threat situation for the attention of political decision-making bodies and alerts them in the event of emerging crises or unusual changes.
In the event of disasters and emergencies, the FOCP coordinates cooperation between the police, fire brigade, healthcare services, technical operations and civil protection, and takes care of warning and alerting, training and protective infrastructures. The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) and the Spiez Laboratory for the prevention of nuclear, biological and chemical hazards are part of the FOCP.
The FGB processes applications for licences to operate land-based casinos and online gambling, and collects the levies regulated by law. It monitors casinos' security and social concepts and their implementation, keeps an eye on illegal gambling and checks compliance with all regulations and anti-money laundering requirements.
The FOGE is responsible for ensuring both legal and true equality between women and men. In particular, it promotes equal pay and work-life balance, and is committed to preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. The FOGE provides financial assistance to support projects that promote equal opportunities for women and men in the workplace.
